Do you repeatedly find yourself getting involved with people who project their nonsense onto you so that you wind up questioning yourself and your reality even more than you already were before meeting them? Do you leave the company of certain individuals feeling more confused, unstable and bad about yourself than you felt to begin with? Maybe you keep encountering irresponsible, inappropriate, and manipulative behavior in your friendships, romantic relationships, or both. Perhaps there’s somebody with this kind of personality in your family, and they leave your brother and sister alone while targeting you. If so, this episode is right up your ally! In this episode, I’m going to give you five reasons why you might keep finding yourself in relationships with these characters and severely impacted by them. In Part II, the next episode, I’ll show you what you can do about it, sharing a little bit of my own experience while I’m at it. Because heck, I just spent a week alone in Sicily, not eating pizza, but receiving an important reminder about better protecting myself from manipulation.
#1: The first reason you’re a much easier target for gaslighting and other forms of mistreatment when you have OCD is that you lack confidence and frequently question yourself. You question your intentions, memory, thoughts, feelings, and actions. Your brain is always asking you if you’re sure. Are you sure you turned off the stove? Are you sure didn’t offend her? Are you sure you’re not crazy or terrible? Are you sure you’re not going to jail or hell? Are you sure you’re doing the right thing? You’re already not sure and doubting yourself, so the gaslighter’s job is half done. Somebody who doesn’t have a stable, secure sense of self and reality is much easier to break down than somebody who does, right?
